Melville Intermediate - Maori Mihi Example

This video is Hayze's explanation of a Maori Mihi, followed by her Mihi. We have put the words in English and Maori on the screen as she says them so you can follow along. There are some key phrases that you need to be listening for in her Mihi - they are:
  • Ko Taupiri te Maunga – Taupiri is my Mountain.
  • Ko Waikato te Awa - Waikato is my River.
  • Ko Tainui te Waka - Tainui is my Waka (Canoe).
  • Ko Waenga te Whanau - Waenga is my family.
  • Ko Tammy Toku Mama - Tammy is my Mother.
  • Ko Robin Toku Papa - Robin is my Father.
  • Ko Hayze ahau - Hayze is my name.
Just like last year and the year before if you would like help with learning of your Mihi or Maori Language in general please get in contact with our students by leaving a comment or sending us an email we have students who are willing to help with your students learning.

  1. Kia ora Hayze

We could do with some help. We are a class of Year Four children at Appleby School in Nelson. At the moment we are revising saying tena koe, tena korua and tena koutou.

Do you think you would be able to Skype us at 1:30pm next Monday and help us. We would need three people to practice saying hello to so we could get it right.

If you can do that it would be fun. Your teacher knows how to Skype us.

  4. Kia Ora Room 8, thank you for your mihi video. Last night I received a phone call from a friend - her daughter had to work on her first ever mihi and she was really nervous. I sent her the link to your clip and she is feeling a lot better now. Thanks so much. Your actions reach out to people in need everywhere.
